Navigating the Different Types of Glaucoma and Their Treatment Options

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that can cause damage to the optic nerve and lead to vision loss. Glaucoma can be difficult to detect early because it gradually progresses without any noticeable symptoms until it is at an advanced stage. There are different types of glaucoma, each with its own unique characteristics and treatment options, and at Round Rock Eye Consultants, we’re here to help our patients navigate this information. Keep reading to learn more about the different types of glaucoma and available treatment options.

Open-Angle Glaucoma

This occurs when the drainage angle of the eye becomes clogged over time, leading to a gradual increase in the intraocular pressure (IOP). This increased pressure damages the optic nerve, causing vision loss. Treatment options include eye drops, oral medications, laser therapy, and surgery.

Angle-Closure Glaucoma

This glaucoma occurs when the drainage angle of the eye becomes completely blocked, causing a sudden increase in the IOP. This is considered an emergency and can lead to permanent vision loss if untreated. Treatment is laser peripheral iridotomy to improve the flow of fluid. Oral medications or surgery may also be necessary in some cases.

Normal-Tension Glaucoma

This glaucoma occurs when the optic nerve is damaged despite having normal IOP. The exact cause of normal-tension glaucoma is unknown. Treatment includes eye drops, medications, or surgery.

Congenital Glaucoma

Congenital glaucoma is a rare form of glaucoma that is present at birth or within the first few years of life. Treatment for congenital glaucoma often involves surgery, such as goniotomy or trabeculotomy.

Secondary Glaucoma

This is a result of an underlying condition, such as eye injuries, eye tumors, or certain medications. Treatment options depend on the underlying cause and may include eye drops, medications, laser therapy, or surgery.
