Treatment Options for Glaucoma: Part 1

In our last blog series, we were going over symptoms you may experience if you have glaucoma. We learned what glaucoma is, as well as when to be concerned if you see spots or halos, loss of peripheral vision or your eyes are red and irritated. It is always important to be screened for glaucoma, as some people don’t experience symptoms until the late stages. Glaucoma is a very serious eye condition and can cause blindness if not treated properly.

If you have already been diagnosed with glaucoma, we want to begin by reassuring you that things are going to be ok. Our eye care team at Round Rock Eye Consultants is here for all your needs and concerns. Knowing you have an award-winning eye doctor on your side will hopefully ease your concerns and worries. There are many different treatments for glaucoma and each case is different from the next. Our eye doctor will design a comprehensive and unique treatment plan that may only require some eye drops or suggest surgery. Together, we will create the most beneficial treatment plan for you.

In this post, we want to go over the different ways glaucoma can be treated, so you can be well informed about your treatment plan. In Round Rock, our main mission is to preserve your eyesight and maintain your eye health.

Treatments for Glaucoma

Eye Drops

For early signs of glaucoma or less severe cases, you may only be prescribed some special eye drops. These eye drops will decrease the pressure within the eye by aiding the eye in draining fluid more naturally, as well as dissipating the amount of fluid being produced. The eye drops are absorbed into the eye and the bloodstream, so it is important to speak with our eye doctor and make sure he is aware of any other medications you may be taking. When you use the eye drops, you want to get the full effect by placing the drops in the eye and then shutting it for about a minute. Additionally, you want to massage the closed eye and put pressure near the tear duct. You may feel a burning sensation, but this goes away fairly quickly. Always ensure you are using the drops as recommended by your doctor, as this will help treat your glaucoma and prevent it from worsening.

Medications

In cases where the drops aren’t working on their own, he may prescribe certain medications to function alongside your eye drop regimen. The primary function of glaucoma medications is to relieve pressure in the eye by enabling less fluid creation. These medications will be administered a few times a day, but follow the dose given by our eye doctor. Just like with the drops, the doctor needs to know if there are any other medications you are presently taking, as some medications do not coincide with this glaucoma treatment.

These are just two of the ways we may treat your glaucoma. Our eye doctor will come up with a comprehensive and specific treatment plan made just for your eyes. Sometimes you may need more complex treatments, such as surgery. Our eye doctor will weigh all options carefully and do everything in his power to preserve your sight.
